24-Hour Holter Monitoring

Recommended appointment

Holter

Book through our online booking link and select Holter. This service requires two visits: fitting at the first visit and removing the monitor approximately 24 hours later. Reception can confirm arrangements for your return visit.

24-Hour Holter Monitoring

A Holter monitor is a wearable device that continuously records your heart's electrical activity throughout an ordinary day and night. Unlike a resting ECG, which captures only a brief snapshot, Holter monitoring can help investigate changes in heart rhythm that occur intermittently.

At DC Medical Centre, we fit and remove the ALTO Holter monitor and arrange for the recording to be assessed by a cardiologist, who prepares a formal written report.

We also accept Holter monitoring request forms from external practitioners. Bring your request form and referring practitioner's details when attending.

Your Holter appointment at a glance

Device: ALTO wearable Holter monitor

Recording: Approximately 24 hours, including overnight

Visits: Two — fitting and removal

Total fee: $70, including cardiologist report

Medicare: No rebate for the $70 fee

Why your practitioner may recommend Holter monitoring

Palpitations or skipped beats

Investigating a racing, fluttering or irregular heartbeat that may not be present during an office ECG.

Dizziness or unexplained fainting

Looking for an association between episodes of symptoms and recorded heart rhythm changes.

Known rhythm conditions

Assessing selected rhythm concerns or response to treatment as recommended by a clinician.

Two visits, one 24-hour recording

1

Visit one — fitting

Attend your booked Holter appointment. Our staff prepare the skin, fit the ALTO monitor and explain how to wear it, mark symptoms and care for the device during normal activities and sleep.

2

Visit two — removal

Return to DC Medical Centre approximately 24 hours later for staff to remove the monitor. The recorded data is then submitted for cardiologist interpretation and a written report.

Please make sure you can attend both visits before booking. Reception will confirm the device return appointment and any practical arrangements.

About the ALTO Holter monitor

Our ALTO monitor is designed to make 24-hour cardiac recording more comfortable and convenient. It is small, lightweight, lead-free and shower-resistant, so many normal daily activities can continue while you wear it.

The device records heart rhythm continuously. You can double-tap the monitor to mark an event if you experience symptoms such as palpitations or dizziness. This helps your clinician compare reported symptoms with your recorded rhythm.

Looking after the device

Usual activities: Continue ordinary activity and sleep with the monitor attached, unless our team advises otherwise.
Water: ALTO is shower-resistant, but do not swim, bathe or submerge it. Follow the fitting team's specific showering instructions.
Symptom marking: Double-tap the device when symptomatic, and note the time and activity if given a diary.
Keep it in place: Do not remove or adjust the monitor yourself. Call reception if it becomes loose or uncomfortable.

Preparing for your fitting

  • Shower before attending and wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Avoid lotions, oils or powders on your chest.
  • Bring your medication list and any Holter request form from an external practitioner.
  • Let us know if you have sensitive skin or an adhesive allergy.
  • Plan to return at the agreed time approximately 24 hours later.

Your cardiologist report

Once the monitor has been returned, the recording is sent for analysis and cardiologist reporting. The written report is included in the $70 fee, with no separate reporting charge.

Your treating or referring practitioner should review the report with you and explain any findings or recommended follow-up. The monitor is not watched live and is not an emergency alert system.

Holter monitoring fees

Holter monitoring costs $70. There is no Medicare rebate for this fee, so the full $70 is payable by the patient. The fee includes fitting and removing the ALTO monitor, processing the recording and the cardiologist's written report.

We accept requests from other practitioners. See our Fees page for further information and contact reception if you have questions before booking.

ECG vs Holter

ECG: A short recording of your heart rhythm at a single point in time.

Holter: Continuous rhythm recording over approximately 24 hours, potentially detecting intermittent abnormalities not shown on a single ECG.

Serious symptoms need urgent medical attention

Call 000 for severe or persistent chest pain, collapse, severe breathlessness or other emergency symptoms. Holter monitoring is not continuously observed and must not be used instead of emergency assessment.

A Holter monitor is a portable device that continuously records the electrical activity of your heart while you go about your normal daily routine. It can help detect rhythm changes not captured during a brief ECG.

ALTO is a small, lightweight, lead-free wearable monitor attached to the chest. Most people can continue ordinary daily activities while wearing it.

The ALTO monitor is shower-resistant, unlike some older Holter devices. Follow the fitting team's instructions for showering, and avoid swimming, bathing, submerging the device or loosening its attachment.

Yes. The monitor should remain attached during sleep so the full recording can be completed. Try not to dislodge the device.

You can mark an event on the ALTO device by double-tapping it when symptoms occur. You may also be asked to record the time, symptoms and activity in a diary to help the cardiologist interpret the recording.

Contact reception promptly for instructions. Avoid trying to repair or reposition the device yourself unless the fitting team has shown you how.

Shower before your visit, wear loose two-piece clothing and avoid lotions, oils or powders on the chest. Bring any referral and your medication list. Some skin preparation may be needed for secure attachment.

After the monitor is removed, the data is submitted for analysis and formal reporting by a cardiologist. Your treating or referring practitioner can review the completed report with you. Reporting time can vary, so confirm follow-up arrangements with the practice.

No. A Holter records heart rhythm during the monitored period and may not capture symptoms that happen less frequently. Your practitioner may recommend further tests based on your history and symptoms.

An ECG records a brief snapshot of heart electrical activity, whereas a Holter continuously records that activity across a longer period, typically 24 hours at our practice.

Seek emergency help by calling 000 for serious symptoms. A Holter monitor is a recording device, not an emergency alert or real-time monitoring service. Do not wait for the device to be removed or the report to be completed.
