Specialist Referrals in Darlinghurst

RECOMMENDED APPOINTMENT FOR THIS SERVICE

Brief (8 minutes), Standard (15 minutes), Video (15 minutes) or Telephone (8 minutes)

Brief: repeat referrals for an existing specialist and known condition, where no detailed reassessment is needed. Standard: new specialist referrals requiring an in-person assessment.

Telephone or Video: may suit eligible existing patients requesting a straightforward repeat referral, subject to practitioner assessment and Medicare telehealth requirements. New referral requests generally require an in-person appointment at our practice.

Specialist Referrals

At DC Medical Centre, our general practitioners can assess whether a referral to a private medical specialist or public hospital outpatient service is appropriate for further investigation, diagnosis or treatment.

You can discuss your preferred specialist, whether you want to access public or private care, and the clinical information needed to support your referral. Your GP must assess the request and may require examination, recent reports or investigations before issuing a referral.

New or Repeat Referral?

Repeat referral: If your current specialist needs a renewed referral for an existing condition, a Brief appointment may be appropriate.

New referral: For a different concern or first specialist assessment, book a Standard in-person consultation. More complex cases may need a longer appointment.

Public vs Private Specialist Referrals

Comparison Public Outpatient Clinic Private Specialist
Cost Free for Medicare card holders. Initial consultations generally cost approximately $200–$400 prior to Medicare rebates which are typically around $90–$150, depending on the consultation type.
Waiting Time Often several months. Some non-urgent clinics may have waiting times of 6–12 months or longer. Typically within a few weeks, although popular specialists may have longer waits.
Choice of Doctor You cannot choose your treating specialist and will be allocated a clinician within the outpatient service. You can choose your preferred specialist.
Referrals Submitted directly by your practitioner to the nominated public outpatient clinic through HealthLink. Provided electronically or in print. Valid for another specialist in the same specialty, even if a different doctor is named.
Appointments The outpatient clinic assesses your referral and contacts you when an appointment can be offered. Contact the clinic directly for waiting-time enquiries. You contact your chosen specialist's rooms directly to arrange an appointment.

Costs and waiting times are indicative only and vary between providers, specialties and clinical circumstances. Private consultation fees and rebates should be confirmed directly with your specialist. Public outpatient care may involve fees for patients who are not eligible for publicly funded treatment.

How a Public Referral Works

1. Referral: Your practitioner submits the referral and relevant clinical information to the nominated clinic.

2. Triage: The hospital checks eligibility and available services and prioritises your referral according to clinical need.

3. Appointment: The outpatient service contacts you about next steps. Submission does not guarantee acceptance or an appointment.

Public Outpatient Waiting Times and Follow-Up

You may wish to allow approximately 2–4 weeks for initial processing or communication, but this is only a planning guide. Some clinics take considerably longer and may not provide an immediate acknowledgement.

Following triage, the clinic may offer an estimated wait time. Urgent referrals are prioritised according to clinical need and clinic capacity.

Hospitals may call from private or unknown numbers. Please respond to any messages and keep your contact information up to date.

For referral status, appointment dates or waiting times, contact the receiving outpatient clinic directly. DC Medical Centre may receive clinical correspondence but does not routinely receive appointment scheduling information.

Our Local Public Hospital Outpatient Clinics

The following public hospitals are located in and around central Sydney. Distances are approximate straight-line estimates from DC Medical Centre at 13C Burton Street, Darlinghurst.

Not all hospitals provide every specialist service or treat every medical condition. Referral criteria, clinic availability and geographical catchment requirements vary between hospitals.

Hospital telephone numbers may connect to the main switchboard or a particular outpatient department. Confirm the appropriate clinic when calling.

Referral Validity and Medicare Requirements

How long does a referral last?

Most GP referrals to a specialist are valid for 12 months from the first specialist attendance, not the date the referral was written. GPs can specify a longer or indefinite period when clinically appropriate.

A new or unrelated condition generally requires a new referral, even where a previous referral was indefinite.

Can a referral be backdated?

No. Referrals must not be backdated to cover specialist visits that have already happened. Arrange your referral before attending your specialist appointment.

A referral may sometimes be written on the day of a visit, provided it is issued before the specialist consultation. Confirm requirements with the specialist's rooms.

Requesting Public and Private Referrals

If you want appointments in both systems, please tell your GP. DC Medical Centre ordinarily prepares two separate referral documents for the different recipients: one for the public outpatient clinic and one for the private specialist.

A referral sent to one public hospital through HealthLink is not automatically transferred to another outpatient clinic. Different services may require separate submissions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. A Brief appointment may be appropriate if you already see that specialist for the same ongoing condition and need a routine renewed referral. Your GP may recommend a longer or in-person review if reassessment is needed.

Book a Standard in-person consultation so your GP can assess the new problem, identify an appropriate specialty and document the clinical reason for referral. Complex concerns may require more time.

Existing patients may be eligible for a Telephone or Video consultation for a straightforward repeat referral when clinically appropriate. New specialist referrals generally require an in-person assessment at DC Medical Centre. Medicare telehealth eligibility requirements also apply.

Generally yes, for community-based specialist care. A referral addressed to one doctor can usually be presented to another appropriately qualified specialist in the same specialty. Hospital clinic and administrative requirements can differ.

Usually 12 months from the first specialist consultation under the referral. A GP may specify a longer or indefinite period when clinically appropriate. A new medical issue generally requires a new referral.

Fees vary widely by specialty and provider. Some initial private specialist appointments cost approximately $200–$400, although others can cost more. Ask the specialist for the full fee, applicable Medicare rebate and out-of-pocket cost before booking.

Eligible patients receiving publicly funded outpatient care generally do not pay for the consultation. Costs can depend on eligibility, election as a public or private patient, and the specific service. Confirm directly with the hospital.

A referral may take several weeks to be processed and clinics can take longer to communicate an appointment. A 2–4 week period is only a planning guide. For progress or waiting times, contact the receiving clinic directly.

Contact your specialist’s rooms to confirm whether a renewed referral is needed. If so, arrange a GP consultation before your next specialist appointment. Referrals cannot be backdated.

A referral submitted to one public outpatient clinic is not automatically transferred to another hospital. A separate referral or submission may be needed depending on the receiving service.

Yes. Please tell your GP which services you want to pursue. DC Medical Centre ordinarily issues separate referrals to the nominated public clinic and private specialist.

Sometimes a repeat referral can be issued after reviewing available records. For new symptoms or when clinical reassessment is needed, your GP may require an in-person examination, investigations or additional information before referring.

Book a GP review promptly if your symptoms worsen so your care and referral urgency can be reassessed. For severe or life-threatening symptoms, call Triple Zero (000) or attend an emergency department.

Important Information

Referrals are issued after clinical assessment at the discretion of the treating practitioner.
