Travel Vaccinations

Preparing for an overseas trip involves more than checking entry requirements. At DC Medical Centre, our GPs can review your destination-specific health risks, vaccine history and medical circumstances to recommend appropriate protection before travel.

The vaccines you need depend on where you are going, when you travel, how long you stay and what you plan to do. We recommend arranging a consultation at least 6–8 weeks before you depart when possible.

Explore your destination first

Use Vaccine Hub's travel map to explore vaccines that may be recommended or required for different destinations. This is a planning tool, not a substitute for tailored medical advice.

Vaccines we may discuss

Your GP will recommend vaccinations according to your itinerary and individual risk rather than assuming every traveller needs every vaccine.

Routine protection

Review your existing protection against measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, polio, influenza and other routine infections relevant to your age and health.

Food and water exposures

Hepatitis A and typhoid vaccines may be recommended for destinations or activities with increased exposure risks.

Long stays and outdoor activities

Hepatitis B, rabies pre-exposure vaccination or Japanese encephalitis vaccination may be considered for certain destinations, durations and activities.

Entry requirements and specialist vaccines

Yellow fever or meningococcal vaccination may be relevant to particular destinations or entry requirements. Availability and authorised providers differ by vaccine.

Pricing and government funding

How much do travel vaccines cost?

Travel-specific vaccinations are generally paid for privately. There is no Australian government program providing vaccines free simply because they are required or recommended for overseas travel. Patients may also pay a consultation or administration fee.

A vaccine that is also part of routine immunisation may separately be funded if you meet the National Immunisation Program or NSW eligibility criteria, irrespective of travel. This does not make other travel vaccines free.

See our Fees page for travel vaccine prices and consultation fees →

Before booking or purchasing

Vaccine costs, stock and the number of doses can differ. Please check with reception that your required vaccine is available and confirm current prices on our Fees page.

Some private health insurance policies may contribute to eligible vaccine expenses; check directly with your insurer. A travel vaccine recommendation does not guarantee reimbursement.

Yellow fever vaccination

Yellow fever vaccines are not currently available at DC Medical Centre. We plan to offer this service in the near future, but please contact reception to confirm whether it has become available before booking.

If you need yellow fever vaccination before an upcoming trip, use an authorised yellow fever vaccination centre. Some countries require an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis for entry.

Check entry rules and authorised providers

Yellow fever vaccination and certification have specific provider requirements. Entry rules can also depend on your route and transit countries, not just your final destination.

Frequently Asked Questions

Book a Standard Consultation (15 minutes) for travel vaccine advice and assessment. Let reception know your destination and departure date, as complex itineraries or several vaccines may require follow-up appointments.

Ideally book at least 6–8 weeks before departure, particularly if you need a vaccine series. If you are leaving sooner, book as soon as possible because some protection may still be achievable.

Recommendations depend on your destinations, itinerary, season, length of stay, accommodation, activities, previous vaccinations and medical history. Check the Vaccine Hub travel map before your appointment, then confirm the appropriate plan with your GP.

Vaccines supplied specifically for overseas travel are generally not provided free under government travel vaccination programs. A routine immunisation might nevertheless be funded if you independently meet National Immunisation Program or NSW eligibility criteria. Consultation charges and vaccine prices are separate.

See our Fees page under travel vaccinations for vaccine prices and consultation costs. Please confirm current availability and the total cost with reception before attending.

Not currently. We expect to offer yellow fever vaccination in the near future, but availability and authorisation must be confirmed with reception. For imminent travel, arrange vaccination through an approved yellow fever vaccination centre rather than relying on future availability.

Some countries require proof of yellow fever vaccination for entry, including for travel from or transit through certain countries. Requirements vary and change. Yellow fever vaccination must be given at an approved centre to issue the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis.

Some vaccines can be given together, but others require more than one dose or specific intervals. Your GP will check timing, suitability, stock and whether follow-up appointments are needed.

Possibly. Visiting friends or relatives can involve substantial exposure to local infections, even if you know the destination well. Your GP can assess your itinerary and existing immunity.

Malaria prevention usually focuses on mosquito-bite precautions and sometimes prescription antimalarial medication rather than routine travel vaccination. Your GP can discuss appropriate prevention for your destinations.

Some vaccines, particularly live vaccines, may be unsuitable or require specialist assessment in pregnancy or immunosuppression. Tell your GP about pregnancy, plans to conceive, medicines and relevant health conditions before vaccination.
