APPOINTMENT TO BOOK FOR THIS SERVICE
Book a Standard appointment for straightforward ongoing management or a Long appointment for an initial assessment, multiple concerns or a detailed medication discussion. GLP-1 prescriptions require an in-person consultation.
Weight management is about improving overall health as well as achieving and maintaining a sustainable weight. At DC Medical Centre, our practitioners offer personalised assessment and treatment options that take into account your medical history, lifestyle, health risks and individual goals.
Your consultation may explore nutrition, physical activity, sleep, underlying health conditions, medicines that affect weight and, where appropriate, evidence-based prescription treatments.
There is no single approach suitable for everyone. Your practitioner will work with you to identify realistic goals, assess health risks and recommend suitable follow-up or referral options.
Review of weight history, BMI, relevant symptoms, medical conditions, medications, blood pressure and other health measures as clinically indicated.
Practical discussion of balanced nutrition, activity, sleep, habits and sustainable approaches that suit your circumstances.
Consideration of prescription therapies when medically appropriate, including benefits, risks, eligibility and ongoing monitoring.
Follow-up to review progress and side effects, and referral to a dietitian, exercise physiologist or other clinician when appropriate.
All GLP-1 and related weight management injections, including Wegovy and Mounjaro, are prescribed only following an in-person consultation at DC Medical Centre.
This applies to both new and repeat prescriptions. Telephone and video consultations are not available for these prescriptions at our practice.
Height and weight must be recorded at every appointment involving GLP-1 or related weight management prescribing. These measurements support BMI assessment and treatment monitoring.
Our practitioners cannot prescribe these medicines for weight loss to patients in the normal BMI range unless another appropriate clinical indication applies. A prescription is never guaranteed and remains at the practitioner's clinical discretion.
For adults, many medicines specifically approved for chronic weight management have an initial BMI indication of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with at least one weight-related medical condition. Individual medicines may have other approved indications, exclusions or precautions.
A BMI threshold alone does not establish suitability. Your practitioner will consider your health history, treatment goals, risks, contraindications and current prescribing guidance. Read more from the Therapeutic Goods Administration (Wegovy) and TGA (Mounjaro).
Discuss your concerns, medical history and weight goals, and complete relevant measurements and investigations.
Review lifestyle strategies, treatment options, expected benefits, potential risks and any referrals.
Monitor progress, height and weight, treatment response, side effects and whether the management plan needs adjustment.
Consultation fees and Medicare rebates depend on the appointment type and eligibility. Weight management medicines may involve private prescription costs, and additional services may incur fees.
Please review our Fees page and check medicine pricing with your pharmacy. Prescription approval and PBS subsidy are not guaranteed.
Your GP will discuss your medical history, weight goals, eating and activity patterns, sleep, current medications and relevant health conditions. They may assess your BMI, waist measurement, blood pressure and the need for further investigations.
No. DC Medical Centre requires all appointments for prescribing or renewing GLP-1 and related weight management injections to be conducted in person, including ongoing prescriptions.
Yes. DC Medical Centre requires an up-to-date height and weight measurement at every appointment involving these medications, to help document BMI and monitor treatment. Other measurements or tests may also be needed.
Generally not for weight loss. Our practitioners do not prescribe GLP-1 or related medicines for cosmetic weight reduction in patients with a normal BMI, unless another appropriate clinical indication applies. Prescribing is always subject to an individual medical assessment.
For many Australian-approved weight management medicines, adult indications include an initial BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above with a qualifying weight-related health condition. This does not guarantee a prescription, and eligibility varies by medicine and clinical indication.
No. These are different brands and products with different approved uses. Wegovy contains semaglutide, Mounjaro contains tirzepatide (a dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist), and Ozempic contains semaglutide but is primarily approved for type 2 diabetes in Australia.
Your practitioner may recommend investigations, such as blood glucose or HbA1c, lipids, liver or kidney tests, depending on your health history, symptoms and proposed treatment. Not every patient needs the same tests.
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation and abdominal discomfort can occur. More serious problems are possible. Seek prompt medical advice for severe or persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting or symptoms of dehydration.
Weight management medicines may be unsuitable during pregnancy and while planning pregnancy. Tell your practitioner if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning to conceive so they can discuss medicine-specific precautions and stopping periods.
Treatment duration varies. Your practitioner will review benefits, side effects, health goals and weight changes over time. Weight management often needs ongoing nutrition, activity and behavioural support, whether or not medication is used.
Medicine costs and PBS eligibility vary by product, indication and the patient's circumstances. A private prescription may be required and consultation fees may also apply. Check the current costs with your practitioner and pharmacy.
Choose a Standard Consultation (15 minutes) for a straightforward follow-up or a single concern, or a Long Consultation (30 minutes) for an initial or complex weight management assessment, multiple issues or a more detailed treatment discussion. An in-person appointment is essential for any GLP-1 prescription request.
Choose a Standard or Long in-person appointment according to your needs. Your practitioner will assess which management options are appropriate for you.
